　　我上中學(xué)時(shí)沒(méi)有學(xué)過(guò)音標(biāo)，基本上是跟著教師念，對(duì)不對(duì)不得而知。有時(shí)會(huì)鬧出笑話，例如dining一room中的第一個(gè)i，不發(fā) [i]，而發(fā)[ai]，但是教師讀成[i]，我們也就跟著讀錯(cuò)了，后來(lái)才糾正過(guò)來(lái)。上大學(xué)以后改學(xué)俄語(yǔ)，大學(xué)畢業(yè)以后又自學(xué)過(guò)一些英語(yǔ)， 能閱讀有關(guān)的專業(yè)書(shū)籍。但是從來(lái)沒(méi)有學(xué)過(guò)“聽(tīng)”和“說(shuō)”，基本上 是“啞巴英語(yǔ)”。

　　1979年45歲時(shí)第一次隨團(tuán)去法國(guó)和德國(guó)參觀。當(dāng)時(shí)我能閱 讀自己熟悉的專業(yè)書(shū)刊，算是代表團(tuán)中英語(yǔ)水平比較高的。但一到外國(guó)，除了一般的問(wèn)候語(yǔ)以外幾乎都聽(tīng)不懂，說(shuō)不了，所以根本聽(tīng) 不懂技術(shù)講解。對(duì)于熟悉的專業(yè)書(shū)面材料，如果是用大寫(xiě)字母寫(xiě)成的'說(shuō)明，一時(shí)還反應(yīng)不過(guò)來(lái)，需要在腦子中翻譯成小寫(xiě)才看得懂。 代表團(tuán)團(tuán)長(zhǎng)還不時(shí)地鼓勵(lì)我“膽子大一些”。其實(shí)哪里是什么膽子大小的問(wèn)題，聽(tīng)不懂，說(shuō)不了，看不懂，哪里來(lái)的膽子？

　　在國(guó)外期間，我與每一個(gè)不會(huì)外語(yǔ)的人一樣，口袋里裝著一個(gè) 紙條，上寫(xiě)“我住在XXX旅館，請(qǐng)把我送回去。”以防一旦走失時(shí)使用。我當(dāng)時(shí)是某設(shè)計(jì)院總工程師，高級(jí)工程師，看著這樣的紙條， 心里真有一種說(shuō)不出的被侮辱感，“我這個(gè)中國(guó)高級(jí)工程師和總工程師只有這樣的水平，與文盲差不多，外國(guó)人怎么會(huì)看得起我們？” 發(fā)憤之心油然而生，回國(guó)以后下決心發(fā)奮學(xué)習(xí)，努力提高英語(yǔ)口語(yǔ)能力。
